Sierra Student Coalition Stepping Up
click for print view

by Laura Wright | 2004

Summary: West Virginia's student environmentalists will keep up the pressure this semester, too.

As the 2004-05 school year begins, young environmentalists across the state are coming together and making our presence felt. In Morgantown, we have already let the GOP know where we stand as the educated citizens paid a visit to “Reggie the Registration Rig” when he rolled into town Aug. 13.

Last semester was a busy one. In addition to classes, we became major players in the negotiations of the new WVU Recycling contract (and our guys got the job – Yeah!). We also raised awareness and money in the fight against mountaintop removal, and obtained over 500 student comments and contact information during our participation in Earth Week “dorm storming” for clean air and water. For the latter effort, one of the highest numbers of any campus in the country, we were awarded the Stephanie Jowers Conservation Award by the National Sierra Student Coalition.

Now, after a few months of work, rest, training, conferences and meetings, we are ready to step up and see 2004 go out with a bang. With more work and, of course, more fun. And we would like to invite all students to join in with us!

Laura is the WV State Coordinator for the SSC and would love to hear from any student environmental activists or groups in West Virginia, to hear accomplishments and plans for the upcoming school year. A statewide website is also under construction and any links to existing sites, or technical assistance, would be greatly appreciated.
