The Monongahela National Forest is in the midst of its planning process. Every ten years all of the U.S. National Forest agencies undergo a process of reexamining their management goals and practices. This is a public process and there are avenues in which you can provide comments. One of those avenues will be opening up this summer. The Draft of the new forest plans will be released. That document gives us (usually) ninety days to select from several management options and provide additional guidance. The Sierra Club is taking this moment to mobilize our membership and our communities by making this a high profile issue. If you are interested in helping us this summer we are going to have a grassroots mobilization planning meeting in May.
We are looking for folks all over the state to have a role in this effort. If you have ever hiked, picnicked, or boated in this forest it is your obligation to inform the Forest Service of your priorities. We will be providing trainings and other volunteer opportunities all summer. There will also be a series of Open Houses sponsored by the Forest Service at areas around the state. It would be great if we could get large responses to each of these. Internships are also available. Contact Vicky Mattson at firstname.lastname@example.org or (304)342-3182.
