by Ivan Steifel | 2006

Students gather in Morgantown to discuss and plan on actions to tackle Global Warming and Energy Issues

Over 75 students converged on Morgantown for the Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia Energy Gathering on October 20. This summit was a continuation of the West Virginia Energy Gathering tradition. Both the Sierra Student Coalition and the Student Environmental Action Coalition collaborated to organize this three day conference and make it a success.

The event’s lectures and workshops were designed to fulfill many goals. The first section of the summit focused on educating and inspiring students to tackle energy issues in Appalachia. Next, participants were equipped with skills to become better activists and more strategic organizers. The event also provided a space to strategize and network with other activists in the region. But in the end, so many students could not come together and not try and have some fun. Two traditional bluegrass concerts with the theme of roots and resistance filled the evening hours of the energy gathering.

Students in Appalachia recognize that overcoming energy issues is the challenge their generation. Global warming threatens the Earth’s future. Mountaintop removal threatens Appalachia’s future. Seeing this, students are determined to overcome mountaintop removal and global warming. The Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia Energy Gathering is just one steep towards empowering a new generation of activists to re-energize Appalachia and the World.
