Chapter Members in the Eastern Panhandle: Help SAVE One Mountain!
Citizens in and around Gerrardstown, in Berkeley County, are working to save North Mountain from being destroyed. Continental Brick and North Mountain Shale LLC have indicated their intentions to mine over 246 acres of the pristine mountain for shale to make bricks.
The mountain is in the Mill Creek watershed. The amount of silt and contaminated runoff could eventually end up in the Chesapeake Bay. Residents rely on the purity of the water provided by this watershed for their daily use. Wildlife and century old trees and flora make the mountain their home.
The historic village of Gerrardstown cannot withstand the barreling trucks, dust and pollution this project would surely cause. Historic Mount Olive Church (the first freed man’s church) is located just feet away from one of their proposed haul roads. Numerous graves surround the site.
The financial gain of a million dollar corporation should never take precedent over an established historic residential community and majestic mountain.
Everyone in West VA must work to preserve our few remaining precious mountains.
A bumper stick was observed the other day *WEST VIRGINIA*—Almost Level !
Whatever happened to *WEST VIRGINIA* — Almost Heaven? Enough Is Enough!
We need your help to stop this travesty. Volunteers are need for a picket protest of the brick plant located in an industrial area off of Route 9 in Martinsburg, WV for sometime in May. A website is currently being planned and volunteer help is needed to design and host the website, as well as assisting in additional volunteer outreach.
