What Joe Knows

by Jim Sconyers, Chapter Chair | 2009

I know what Joe knows

...Joe Manchin, that is.

I know that he knows, because I know that Joe’s a very smart man
.

I know that Joe knows... That climate change brought on by global warming is on course to devastate our state, nation, and planet.

I know that Joe knows... That coal-fired power plants are a major source of the global warming gases causing unprecedented climate change.

I know that Joe knows... That mountaintop removal coal mining destroys the land and communities of southern West Virginia.

I know that Joe knows...  That the present number of coal miners is only a small fraction of what it used to be.

I know that Joe knows... That economical reserves of coal in West Virginia will run out within 20 - 30 years.

I know that Joe knows... That resource wealth in the coalfields does not reach the people there.

I know that Joe Manchin is a smart man. But here are some things I
don’t know if Joe knows, even though I know he should know.

I
don’t know
if Joe knows... That people want change.

I
don’t know
if Joe knows... That CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants are going to be regulated - it’s inevitable.

I
don’t know
if Joe knows... That West Virginians need new “green” jobs, like the ones that can be found in energy conservation and renewable energy production.

I
don’t know
if Joe knows... That new “green” jobs can’t be off-shored or outsourced to China or anywhere else - they stay right here in West Virginia.

I
don’t know
if Joe knows... That “clean coal” and “carbon neutral coal” are nothing but cheap slogans - they don’t actually exist.

I
hope
Joe knows... That he’s responsible for the welfare of all our citizens, not just the profits of a bunch of megazillionaire out-of-state coal corporations.

I
hope Joe knows... That change is not easy, but it’s time for change in West Virginia.
